They have since surpassed that mark with three wins last week.UWF CLAIMS FIRST-EVER NCAA SOUTH REGION CHAMPIONSHIP* Entering the 2017 NCAA South Regional, UWF had never advacned past the semifinal round … that changed this year as the Argonuats posted two outstanding defensive performances in holding Benedict and Rollins to season low shooting percentages.* Senior PG Alex Coyne was named the region’s Most Outstanding Player after averaging 11 points and 10 assists with a pair of double-doubles … Senior F Katie Bobos also earned all-tournament team honors after she led all players with 54 points in the tournament.LARGE CROWD EXPECTED FOR ARGONAUT GAMES* Despite being located 820 miles and a 12-plus hour drive from Columbus, UWF is anticipating having a good number of supporters in attendance this week … Senior F Katie Bobos’ hometown of Lowell, Ind. is 5 hours west in northeast Indiana (just south of Gary) and she mentioned at least 2-3 dozen friends and family are coming to Columbus … Senior PG Alex Coyne grew up in Pittsburgh and moved to Florida before her junior year of high school; The Steel City is just 3 hours to the east and Coyne said she’s expecting upwards of 20 relatives at the UWF games.* Not to be outdone, head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton will have a number of former players and coaching colleagues cheering for the Argos. The last game came on New Year’s Eve in 2011 with the HU win pushing their lead in the series to 5-1.MORE ABOUT THE NCAA SOUTH REGIONAL* The Argonauts shoot 42 percent overall and 39 percent from outside in their three wins.* UWF did as good a job as any point in the season at getting to the free throw line, making 50-of-69 (.725), compared to just 23 total attempts (on 20 makes) for its opponents – and 14 of those came in the finals against Rollins.* Senior F Katie Bobos averaged 18.0 points in the NCAA Tournament, with 16-of-20 at the FT line and 7.7 rebounds per game … Junior Toni Brewer averaged a double-double with 12.7 points and 14.0 boards per contest … Senior Alex Coyne posted 11.0 points and 10.0 assists with a pair of double-doubles to grab MOP honors … Sophomore G Katie O’Neal has been deadly from behind the arc, making 7-of-16 while averaging 9.0 ppg – the Argos are 8-1 this season when she makes at least three 3-pointers.DEFENSE KEY TO NCAA REGIONAL WINS* The UWF defense has been strong all season but has gone up a notch in the postseason … the Argonauts held Nova Southeastern, Benedict and Rollins to a combined 29.8 percent shooting overall and 30 percent from outside in the regional … Additionally, UWF has played strong ‘D’ without fouling, committing just 39 violations that have led to just 23 free throw attempts for its opponents.GSC IN THE NCAA* With UWF’s advancement to the NCAA Elite Eight, it marks the first time in program history and the 23rd time a GSC school has accomplished the feat … The last GSC member to advance as far was Arkansas Tech in 2011 … Two years ago, Union fell to Nova Southeastern in the regional final.COYNE AMONG TOP PG’s OVER THE LAST TWO SEASONS* There’s no denying the impact Alex Coyne has had on the UWF team since transferring from Southern Miss two years ago … the Pittsburgh, Pa. native who played her final two years of prep ball for her mother at Lake Placid (Fla.) In the last two seasons, she has two of the top three assist marks in program history and has established a new career mark.* In the last two years, Coyne has led Division I and II with 6.80 assists per game. Alex Coyne, UWF    2016-17    235UWF CLAIMS FIRST-EVER GSC REGULAR-SEASON TITLE* Without question, the 2016-17 Gulf South Conference season was one of the most memorable for the UWF women’s basketball program … The team went 18-4 and won its first-ever GSC regular-season championship, leading the league for the final eight weeks of the season … The Argos has previously won the GSC East Division crown in 1998, 1999 and 2006.* The Argonauts’ 18 GSC wins are a new program record, topping the 16 set two years ago when UWF finished second.COYNE NAMED GSC POY BOBOS & BREWER ALSO ALL-CONFERENCE* UWF senior Alex Coyne was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, while teammates Katie Bobos and Toni Brewer were also all-conference selections as announced by the league office last Monday … Coyne and Brewer were named to the first team with Bobos earning second team honors.* This marks the sixth time an Argonaut has won the top honor from the league and first since 2005. Coyne joins former greats Tanisha Ruckman – twice, LaKeisha Little, Erin Vierling and Michelle Gibson as POY recipients.* Coyne has averaged 10.0 points, 6.5 assists and 2.8 rebounds while leading UWF to its first GSC regular-season championship in school history. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native whose family now lives in Navarre, Fla. ranks third in the NCAA in assists and 31st in assist-to-turnover ratio. Her 367 assists in two years at UWF ranks second in school history, while her 6.74 assists per game in that time span ranks third all-time in GSC history. She was also an Academic All-District selection last month … This is her second all-conference nod after second-team accolades a year ago following her transfer from Southern Miss.* Brewer has been the most dominant forward in the GSC this season, posting 13.9 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. The junior from Huntsville, Ala. ranks eighth in NCAA with 15 double-doubles & fourth in both rebounds and defensive rebounds. She has put up 22 double-figure scoring games and 18 double-figure rebound, including three games with at least 20 boards. Earlier this season she surpassed 1,000 career points and currently has 1,057 … Brewer was a second-team all-conference winner two years ago when she was also named the GSC Freshman of the Year.* Bobos earns her second all-GSC award after collecting 12.0 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, joining Brewer as the only players in the league to average a double-double. A four-year starter from Lowell, Ind., she ranks 12th in NCAA with 14 double-doubles and 16th in rebounds. This season she became UWF’s career leader in rebounds and went over 1,000 points. The national polls will continue through the end of the season.UWF MAINTAINS NO. 2 SPOT IN NCAA REGIONAL RANKING* UWF spent all three weeks ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division II regional rankings and was the No. 2 seed in the NCAA South Regional. Eckerd was the No. 1 team. The Argos lead the region with 25 in-region wins.* In the final region rankings, the Argos were the highest of four GSC teams in the rankings, with Valdosta State at No. 7, Lee at No. 8, North Alabama at No. 9 and Union at No. 10. * The region polls will determine the five at large bids to the eight-team NCAA South Region Tournament in March. The eight-team tournament will consist of the three conference tournament champions from the south region (Gulf South, Sunshine, Southern Intercollegiate) and five at-large bids. The squad played four games, visited local sugarcane villages, orphanages and women’s shelters while ministering and sharing the love of basketball.UWF PICKED 3RD IN GSC PRESEASON POLL* The UWF women’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the Gulf South Conference preseason coaches poll … UWF earned a total of 101 points in the voting process, collecting one first place vote, a league-high five second-place votes, one third, three fourth and a fifth place vote.* Defending regular-season champion Union was picked first, followed by Delta State, which won the GSC Tournament title. Lee followed UWF in fourth, and Shorter was picked fifth.* Seniors Katie Bobos and Alex Coyne were each named to the 5-member preseason all-conference team … Bobos was a second-team all-GSC and academic all-GSC honoree last year after averaging 12.8 points and 8.0 rebounds. The Lowell, Indiana native scored in double figures in 21 games and collected eight double-doubles … Coyne was also a second team choice a year ago after transferring from Southern Miss. In her first season with the Argos, the point guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania averaged 10.0 points, 6.7 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.
