first_imgWest Florida Falls in GSC Finale at North Alabama Share Maurice Thomas (Photo by Ron Besser) center_img FLORENCE, Ala. – The West Florida men’s basketball team saw its Gulf South Conference season come to an end in a 97-79 loss at North Alabama on Thursday night.  The Argonauts could not keep pace with the hot-shooting Lions, as UNA finished the night shooting 58.5 percent and had three players finish with 20 or more points.  With the loss, UWF (9-14, 2-8 GSC) is eliminated from GSC Tournament contention, while UNA improved to 12-12, 4-5 with the win.Senior Max Hoggard (Micanopy, Fla./P.K. Yonge HS) played only 20 minutes due to fouling out, but the forward led UWF with 16 points and was a perfect 6-6 mark from the field.  Senior Maurice Thomas (Milton, Fla./Pensacola JC) scored 15 with seven rebounds, and freshman Peter Connole (Orlando, Fla./Pine Castle Christian Academy) added 14.UNA jumped out to a blazing 69.0 percent start from the field in the first half, as the Lions went into halftime up 49-40.  Daviel Clements scored 17 first half points, including a 5-6 mark from three-point territory.  The second half was almost identical, as North Alabama outscored UWF 48-39 in the second period to clinch the 18-point victory.  This time it was Jared Strode that led UNA with 17 points in the second half, and Rory Miller added 15.The Argonauts finished the night shooting 50 percent from the field, 37 percent from three-point territory, and 81.3 percent from the free throw line.  The Lions outrebounded the Argonauts 36-29, led by Miller’s 11.Strode and Miller both shot 11-15 from the field, and Strode finished with 28 points with Miller just behind at 27.  Clements finished with 20 points, scoring just one more three-pointer after his outburst in the first half.UWF will close out the regular season with two more games, first a road game at Lambuth on Saturday, February 20 and then the home finale against Concordia-Selma on Tuesday, February 23.  For information on all UWF Athletics, visit Print Friendly Versionlast_img
